Embedding Sustainability into Business Practice
As part of our partnership with Redgate, we spoke with Jeff Eneberi, Redgate's Head of M&A and General Counsel, on the structural decisions that turn sustainability commitments into business practice. We've included select highlights from the conversation below.
How did you build Redgate’s sustainability strategy, and what drove the business case?
"The business case essentially built itself. Customers were asking us to complete ESG questionnaires. Employees were asking what we were doing on social and environmental topics. By 2023, those questions were becoming more frequent. We recognized that we didn’t have in-house expertise, so we engaged external ESG specialists, and over nine months, we ran cross-functional workshops across the business to identify goals that were aligned with our commercial priorities and resonated with our people. The result was a strategy that works for Redgate as an employer, works for our customers, and positions us well against regulatory expectations."

How have you operationalized sustainability on a day-to-day basis?
"After defining our strategy, the most important decisions were structural ones. I completed a program at Cambridge University to build a foundation on sustainability management. We later appointed a dedicated ESG manager to drive the program forward rather than leaving it as a shared responsibility. We embedded ESG into our risk register, so it sits alongside other material business risks. And we report to the board on ESG progress twice a year, which serves a dual purpose: it keeps board members informed and genuinely upskilled on the topics, and it hardwires in a cadence of accountability. If something isn’t in the risk register and it isn’t in front of the board, it gets pushed aside. Getting it embedded in those structures is what makes it stick."
